When I ask this question I get a very wide range of responses. Some people quickly state “A couple of minutes”. Others, who obviously do not have a lot of experience with cleaning toilets, stare in silence.
My response is “It depends on when you start and on how many interruptions you have”.
You see, there are many, many things in life that can be done fairly quickly if you just get started and not allow things to interrupt you during the process – like paying bills, taking the garbage out or organizing a closet. Once these things are done, life is a little easier, but so many people just never get started so they never enjoy the rewards that come with completion.
Years ago I hired a life coach to help me begin my business. Each week she had me complete a form to prepare myself for our telephone session which would occur on Monday mornings. One of the things on the form was to list my “tolerations”. These were the things that I was tolerating or putting up with that ultimately drained my energy.
Another question asked me to identify the toleration that I wanted to get rid of in the upcoming week. The third question involved listing the things that I had accomplished the previous week.
I was amazed at how this simple strategy allowed me to make ongoing progress when it came to freeing my life of the things that I had been tolerating. At the same time, it freed me to move forward with goals that otherwise might never have been reached.
Sometimes you might be facing larger projects that those mentioned and they require more time and effort but the process is the same. Whether you are planning to complete a university degree, paint the whole house or set up a new business system there are specific steps that will help you to get there.
  1. Decide what you need and want to accomplish. It is best to write this down on a piece of paper because that forces you to be clear.
  2. Set a realistic deadline for completion.
  3. Break the project into smaller pieces each of which can be easily accomplished during the next week.
  4. Block time on your calendar to work on the project.
  5. Tell others about your goals so that they will encourage you and not allow distractions to interfere with your progress.
  6. Do what you promised yourself that you would do – even if you don’t feel like it at the time.
  7. Celebrate! Once you have worked through each of the steps in a week you will feel confidence and pride. Success breeds success! It will be easier to begin the next week knowing that you are closer to reaching the goal and that you can get there just by putting one foot in front of the other, one week at a time.
Follow this formula and it won’t be long until your life will be organized, your goals met and your toilet will be sparkling clean!

2. Are these your goals or someone else’s?
Are you living into what you believe is a predetermined future for yourself? If your parents, grandparents and siblings are all lawyers do you feel obligated to be the same even though you dislike the profession?
You are not anyone but who you are and you need to determine your goals based on that fact in order to live your dream life. A life lived through others expectations, is a life that is filled with regret and what could have been.
You do not have to feel selfish for pursuing your own dreams and not the dreams others have for you. You have the right to listen to your heart and follow what you believe is your destiny.
3. Are you passionate about your vision of life?
If you are not waking up excited to live the day then chances are you do not have personal development goals that you are passionate about. People who are passionate about their lives do not want to go to bed at night because they love being awake. They live such fulfilling lives that they cannot wait to wake up and do it again.
If you just can’t wait until its bedtime so you can finally end the day you need to identify what you are passionate about. What could you wake up to tomorrow that would make you throw off the covers and practically run out the door? Your real goals will give you energy you never knew existed.
4. Do you understand what success feels like?
Success has a million different definitions and every one of those only applies to the person who is saying it. Success is a feeling we get inside and not our materialistic belongings.
Take time to reflect on what you consider to be past successes. Do not think of the achievement you got in terms of tangible rewards but try to express how you felt in that situation. Was it exhilarating and mind-blowing or were you just slightly happy. 
Real goals make you feel like you are on top of the world. Internet marketers always say that their first $100 online is more memorable than their next $100,000. The reason is because that $100 made them feel true success inside. They actually did what they set out to do and it matched what they wanted it to feel like.

Spend the time needed to determine your definition of success. What will life look like, who will you be and what will it take to get there. Most importantly what do you expect to feel when you arrive at your dream destination?
5. What are the daily habits you can create to achieve your goals?
Successful people have successful habits. They didn’t just stumble upon those habits but through taking one step each day towards their personal development goals they developed them. By setting up daily routines that push you towards your goals you can create habits.
Most habits are always on autopilot which puts your success on autopilot. If you were in the habit of exercising 30 minutes every day in some form or another I am guessing you would be in fairly good shape. At first you may have to force yourself to go but before long you would wake up and consider doing nothing but go exercise.
This applies to every goal you have. Set up a plan on how to take small daily steps, they turn into habits and before you know it your goal is accomplished.
6. Are you telling yourself: “I can’t achieve these goals?
Most people don’t believe they can actually achieve the goals they set. They do a good job of writing their goals and planning the steps they need to take but the whole time they tell themselves inside that it won’t happen. So it doesn’t.
If your belief system is telling you to forget it this isn’t going to happen you will need to discover where those beliefs come from. Maybe you don’t believe following your passion will pay the bills or that you can’t be rich because your parents are poor. You could have been hurt by someone so you believe you can’t be loved. I cannot stress enough the importance of having a positive self-belief system.
You can, you will and you deserve to be.
7. Are you afraid of success?
You thought fear of failure was bad. Can you imagine the fact that some people are more afraid of being successful then failing? If they never get to be successful they can blame their failures but when they achieve success they only see one way to go and that is down.
Instead of going after their goals fully they essentially self-sabotage themselves by creating situations where they get fired, make people mad at them or anything that would give them an excuse as to why success wasn’t possible. Then they are like “Whew, I almost became more than I already am, dodged that bullet.”
Look at success as something you achieve and then do again, over and over. There is no going backwards just in a different direction.
I understand change is scary but I find it even scarier to think that all I am right now is all I ever will be. You deserve to live the life of your dreams so go out there and crush those personal development goals.

Planning is essential by all means! But we can begin to have the confidence that we need to move ahead before we have a plan. We don’t have to wait till all the blueprints are in place and everyone we need to make it all happen has signed off on them! Often times, we will not meet everyone we need to make our visions come true until we have shown up and walked a few steps down our chosen path.
Life is a dance, driven by the passion of desire. It doesn’t respond to fear, but to fearlessness. Your FAITH is rewarded in life AND your fears are confirmed. So try FAITH and then take ONE STEP! What does ONE STEP do? One step sends an exuberant affirming message to you. It screams “You CAN do this!” That one step should give you enough confidence and energy to take TWO more steps. That’s how we walk up the ladder of success. In steps. So why do so many people give up before they even take their first step?
Well, here’s a secret about those first step. They need to be small steps! Baby steps! Too often we set up these grandiose first steps, only to fall into the throes of disgust and disenchantment when we fail. We all have done it. Remember your small steps are training ground for the larger steps that you will have to eventually take. There’s no skipping the small steps. The faster we try to get there, the more likely we are to “trip” over the small steps! Allow yourself time to develop your skills. The faster you try to get it all done quickly, the more your dreams can elude you.
Whatever you decide you want to do, accept the fact that you will need to be patient. Patience has its just desserts. Patience breeds quality. It’s okay to take small steps. It’s even okay to fall. Falling is a natural stage of development.The important lesson is to not sop reaching towards our goals, in spite of our falls.
Every desire that is placed in your heart is a seed that grows in time.-Whether that seed be for love, self-respect or maturation, forgiveness, spiritual growth, personal or career advancement – they all take time and nurturing. Give yourself the gift of nurturing. Be gentle and compassionate with yourself and begin with small steps.
